Helmeted Guinea Fowl: These are one of my favorite birds because they look so prehistoric. Normally they are very difficult to get close to but this one was part of a flock at the Injusthi Camp that woke us just before dawn with their hysterical cackles. |
Cape Buffalo: This was one of a pair of males away from the heard - either because they were too old or they had left to regain their strength after looking after the cows. The bird is a Red Billed Oxpecker that has a symbiotic relationship with a number of animals: they remove ticks from the skin & eat them and in addition they, with their sharp eyes, provide an early warning alarm service. |
Zebra: This was one of two that came down to a waterhole. They were very reluctant to come anywhere near the hide in which we were sitting but eventually their thirst overcame their fear - but only just! |
Impala: One of the most common of the prey species - they are occasionally know as 'fast food for Lions' this may because they are fleet of foot or because they have markings on their hind quarters that look like the McDonald's 'Big M.' |
